Supermarket Data from June 2022 - May 2023

A Comparison of 9 Chains and Common Habits of Supermarket Shoppers

Our team compared the website traffic of 9 supermarket sites in the United States: Albertsons, Costco, Safeway, Sprouts, Stater Bros, Trader Joe's, Walmart, Whole Foods, as well as 99 Ranch. We collected data from the most recent 12 months: June 1, 2022 up until May 31, 2023.

Obvious Spike during Thanksgiving and Black Friday

In general, daily traffic for all 9 sites analyzed would range between 18M to 20M visits, depending on the day. However, it can be noted that volumes begin to tremendously pick up leading up to Thanksgiving and Black Friday. Online visits to the supermarket sites breach beyond 20M daily visits up until Christmas and New Year. From there, online traffic volumes begin to normalize to the 18M to 20M daily range.

Mobile Traffic vs. Desktop Traffic

Unlike some sectors where mobile traffic dramatically outperforms desktop traffic, in the supermarket space many Americans still prefer shopping via their desktops or laptops. The split here appears to be a 60-40% split, in favor of mobile traffic.

Mini-spikes on Mondays

On the chart above, you can observe that there are mini-spikes on Mondays - implying that Americans prefer to look up and order things needed for the week.

Walmart leading online volumes, followed by Costco

Of course, Walmart and Costco are immense online players and they likewise command approximately 93% of all online volumes. When we removed Walmart and Costco from our charts, we observed that the other 7 players still followed the same trends lines in terms of volumes.
